Improvements to North Middlesbrough's transport infrastructure have been given the go-ahead with over £12m of Government funding announced today by Transport Minister Rosie Winterton. The North Middlesbrough Accessibility scheme comprises a number of improvements within the area including a new link road with pedestrian and cycle facilities between Newport and Riverside Park Road; widening of the existing A66 westbound and eastbound carriageways between Newport and the A19 interchanges; and the widening of the circulatory carriageway at Newport roundabout with increased traffic signal control.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton said: "The scheme will also offer a considerable improvement in conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as improving road safety for all." The Department for Transport will provide £12.3m while Middlesbrough Council and other key stakeholders will meet the remainder of the total £13.5m cost. Construction is due to commence in the next couple of months with completion scheduled by the end of 2009. |
