UK's biggest illegal landfill fined E-mail

A company which ran one of the largest illegal landfill sites ever found in the UK, have been ordered to pay £1.2m after admitting to unlawfully dumping millions of tonnes of waste.

In the biggest case of its kind ever brought by the Environment Agency, John Craxford, 67, was told  at Exeter Crown Court that he has six months to pay £448,000. And his firm, John Craxford Plant Hire Ltd, has six months to pay an order for £746,649.

The company had a licence for the site, the court heard, but had committed various breaches of it.

The unprecedented confiscation orders were ordered by Judge Philip Wassall under the Environmental Protection Act and Pollution Prevention and Control regulations. Craxford was also given a three year conditional discharge
