Hull flood report raps Yorkshire Water
Wednesday, 21 November 2007

The utility company Yorkshire Water has been criticised over the floods which hit Hull in June, when over 10,000 homes and businesses were flooded and one man was killed.

The report by the Independent Review Body accuses Yorkshire Water of failing to take preventative measures despite a series of warnings about the flood risk.

Much of the criticism relates to a pumping station at Bransholme which broke down after it was flooded.
As a result homes and businesses nearby remained flooded longer than those in other areas.

The report recommends the pumping station is modernised and its capacity increased. Other recommendations include: Flood protection measures should be compulsory on new buildings in flood risk areas; and schools and other vital social infrastructure should be made flood-proof.

In conclusion, the report urges the Government to issue water companies with mandatory standards for flood protection in drainage systems.
