Construction industry to try and half waste by 2012 E-mail

WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme), together with the Sustainability Forum are calling on the construction industry to achieve a 50% cut in materials waste going to landfill by the year 2012.

The UK construction industry consumes more than 400 million tonnes of materials each year as well as generating over 100 million tonnes of waste. Around 30 million of this ends up at a landfill.

Wrap intends to deliver step-by-step guidance and support to construction companies to achieve this target. They believe that it can be achieved by organisations reducing the amount of waste generated, recycling waste and buying products/materials with recycled content.

The need for better practice will become even more important over the coming years as major projects such as the 2012 Olympics gathers pace.

WRAP’s head of construction, Dr Mike Watson said:

"We already have evidence demonstrating the significant benefits to be gained and we can help put it into practice," said "If this can be translated into action throughout the supply chain, halving construction waste by 2012 is a real possibility."
