Carbon trading threatens construction products manufacturers E-mail
Tuesday, 15 January 2008
Manufacturers of heavyside construction materials will lose out to non-EU countries under plans to cut CO2 emissions. Production of cement steel and aluminium were identified as under threat from other countries in a study by the Carbon Trust.

The Carbon Trust said it is recommending that the European Commission moderates the pace at which allocation of free carbon permits are reduced for these materials. It said this will minimise trade and competitiveness impacts as a medium-term measure while more specific international agreements are developed.

The study concluded that overall UK and EU competitiveness will not be damaged, even if deeper C02 emissions cutbacks are introduced beyond 2012 to achieve the EU’s ambitious target for a 20% reduction in emissions by 2020.
