Plans to transform the old Bickershaw colliery site in Wigan have been revealed by the council and partners. In the next few years, the borough’s largest remaining area of derelict land is set to become a major regional park, with a visitor centre, country walks, and community facilities such as an 18 hole golf course and outside activity area. There are also plans for high quality new homes, businesses and a stunning 40 berth marina. The multi-million pound investment will see some 237 hectares massively transformed, with funding through the National Coalfields Programme with a total of over £36m being provided by central government for the whole Bickershaw Colliery site. Working with Groundwork and English Partnerships, council planners are staging a series of public exhibitions in the area, with a chance for residents to meet officers and discuss the scheme in detail. |
