Contractor Kier Group has won the £27m contract to renew the large barrel-vaulted glazed roof at King’s Cross station, London.

Work is due to begin on the project this month, and will involve the installation of a new glazed roof over the main train shed, requiring 15,000 sq m of glass, of which 2,500 sq m will be photovoltaic glass that will generate around 10% of the station’s electricity requirements.

The contract will run for three years and is part of Network Rail’s £450m upgrade of the station.
