Gleeson Building has won a £18.5m design and build contract for a new Oasis Academy at Immingham in North East Lincolnshire, from Oasis Community Learning.

The project is expected to complete in July 2009.

The academy will be constructed to promote involvement with the local community and so as to have a positive effect on the Immingham area, promising substantial long-term benefits for both adults and young people.

The project will involve the development of six teaching blocks with associated hard and soft landscaping constructed within three sections followed by the demolition of the existing facility.

The teaching blocks vary in size, height and aesthetical appearance. The Academy building intentionally faces the town centre as part of a clear design strategy to address the existing lack of a 'civic' entrance for the school.

A viewing platform and an on-site visiting room will be provided during construction to allow students and staff to watch their new building take shape. Site staff will take part in seminars, workshops and presentations to update students, parents, staff and local residents on progress and allow them to voice comments and concerns. It will also offer employment opportunities for young people wherever possible and will encourage its supply chain to do the same.

Martin Smout, chairman and chief executive of Gleeson Building said: "The Oasis Academy is one which will have benefits not only for the children who are educated in it but also for the wider community. Gleeson Building will use its extensive experience of building educational establishments to involve a large portion of the community but also to ensure that the existing school can continue to operate while the new academy is being built."
