Work to build what will be a landmark building for Corby, is due to begin next month after Galliford Try was awarded the £27.1m construction contract. Warwickshire-based Galliford Try will build the 'Corby Cube' for Corby Borough Council. The six-floor civic building will have a concrete structure and four glass sides and will be set in high quality open space forming a new town square. Facilities will include a 445-seat walnut-clad theatre, additional arts and studio space, library, council one-stop-shop and offices and a council chamber and marriage room. The project is being funded by the borough council together with English Partnerships, East Midlands Development Agency (emda), the Department of Communities and Local Government and Northamptonshire County Council in partnership with the North Northamptonshire Development Company. Designed by the architectural practice HawkinsBrown, the Cube has already garnered international acclaim. It was runner-up to the Beijing Olympic Swimming Pool in the 2007 LEAF Awards for the Best Public Building Design of the Year.
Construction is due to start on 11th February with a completion scheduled for late 2009. |
