Developer’s day earmarked for former steelworks in Wales E-mail
Monday, 23 July 2007
A £300m project to develop a former steelworks in Ebbw Vale came a step closer to fruition today when planners officially approved the Masterplan.

It has taken just five years for the 185-acre industrial site to reach the planning stage, a rarity considering its size and scale.

It is anticipated it will take 10 years to fully develop the site, acquired by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and The Welsh Assembly Government, and when fully operational, will employ approximately 2,000 people.

The work will continue at a rampant pace with the first phase of land earmarked for residential development and going on the market in the autumn.

This will be supported by a developer’s day when potential investors, developers and agents from around the UK will be invited to Ebbw Vale to learn about the available investment opportunities at The Works.

Cllr John Hopkins, chair of the steelworks project partnership and Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council, said: “Investors and funding bodies will be able to look with confidence on the project, and we will be able to continue to drive forward the regeneration of Blaenau Gwent and the Heads of the Valleys region at the same urgent pace, and with the same far-reaching ambition that has characterised the work so far.”

Savills will be the development consultant and marketing agent for the redevelopment of the site.
