Costain has been awarded an £11m contract with Magnox North at its Trawsfynydd site in North Wales. The contract will see the construction of a new internal capping roof to both reactor buildings. The contract, which is for 3 and a half years, will provide secondary weatherproofing to the building core during the Care and Maintenance phase of decommissioning. This is the first phase of the Safestore Height Reduction, which has a total value of over £100m. This involves final deplanting of internal equipment and the demolition of the top 1/3 of the existing reinforced concrete buildings, to the Capping Roof Level and subsequently, the construction of a whole new outer envelope, of steelwork and cladding to blend in with the surrounding countryside. Costain are one of the four partners in a framework on the site, known as TSIF – Trawsfynydd Strategic Integrated Framework who are delivering the task of decommissioning the high risk areas of the former Nuclear Power Station. This is a unique framework in the nuclear industry, due to the extent of integration between the partners. The other framework partners are AMEC Nuclear, Aker Kvaerner and VT Nuclear Services.
