At a glittering awards ceremony held on October 10 in Manchester, Builder & Engineer were proud to honour the best in the industry. With guest speaker - award-winning architect Ian Simpson and entertainment by Mick Miller, the evening proved to be a memorable occassion.

WINNER: Oldham Library / Kier North West
Kier North West constructed the new library and learning resources centre at Oldham under the town’s latest private finance initiative. The library features state of the art design, which blends in with the adjoining gallery. Sustainability was a large contributing factor to the library’s success in the awards, and the building features a host of sustainability features including a plant-covered roof. Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council describes the building as “an exceptional and inspirational building to raise the aspirations of the people of Oldham”.

This was a very tough category to pick a single winner from. However, the judges felt the Salford Sports Village improved the local community sufficiently to deserve the number one spot. The project is a state of the art facility providing a fantastic range of sporting and training opportunities. The £4.7m development has excellent changing accommodation, a community room with space available for corporate events and additional areas available for meetings, activity sessions and courses and an IT suite with over 20 computers.

WINNER: Manchester Hilton / WSP Group
The judging panel decided this landmark project deserved special mention for its contribution to the built environment in Manchester. The Manchester Hilton, otherwise known as Beetham Tower, demonstrates how a well-designed and engineered high-rise building contributes to a vibrant city centre environment. Soaring to a height of 170m, the £150m development is the tallest residential building in Western Europe. At 48 stories it includes a five-star, 285-bedroom Hilton Hotel with 24 floors of apartments above. Its commercial success is testament to the growing popularity of inner-city high-rise living.

WINNER: The Fanshawe, Dagenham / Kier Partnership Homes
The judges were impressed by Kier Partnership Homes’ project to build 58 new homes on a brownfield site in Dagenham, Essex. The company worked alongside timber housebuilder Prestoplan, and used offsite construction methods to build the homes. The existing foundations from the original building, the Pipers public house, were reused and incorporated into the new apartments, which saved time and money.

WINNER: Chy-an-Gweal, Cornwall Powergen with Penwith Housing Association
Penwith Housing Association paved the way forward for other Housing Associations with this Cornish project. The company worked alongside Powergen to install the first earth energy heating in existing housing association homes at Ludgvan in West Cornwall. This phased construction project uses the ground as a source of solar energy.

Turner and Townsend showed its commitment to improving communities with its work for the Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool. The company has also been heavily involved in education and healthcare projects such as the construction of nine schools in South Africa. Turner and Townsend appeared for the first time in this years Sunday Times’ annual list of 100 Best Companies to Work For.

WINNER: Reid Architecture
Reid Architecture claims it wants to appeal to clients who want to make a statement as well as a good return on their investment. Its work on the new executive terminal at Farnborough Airport certainly turned the judges’ heads, as did Edinburgh Airport’s air traffic control tower and the redevelopment of Feltham town centre.

WSP provides integrated management and consultancy services to all aspects of the built and natural environment, ranging from management, engineering and planning to environmental advice. With around 1,850 staff operating from a network of offices throughout the country, WSP is one of the UK’s major multi-disciplinary consultancies, with clients in both public and private sectors. WSP is recognised as an expert in tall buildings, and it developed this expertise when it bought New York structural engineering consultancy Cantor Seinuk in 2000. Cantor now shares offices with WSP in London.

Established in the 1930s, Alfred McAlpine employs over 9,000 people. The civil engineering business is one of the countries leading contractors providing a comprehensive range of services in all sectors of the civil engineering market to both public and private clients. They have been involved in many of the countries major civil landmark projects. The judges were particularly impressed by the work of Alfred McAlpine Project Services on the A30 between Bodmin and Indian Queens. The site required extensive archaeological investigations, whose findings included three Neolithic timber circles.

One judge commented Birse’s entry this year was “absolutely what we wanted for the awards”. Everyone in Birse is passionate about making the industry a safe place to work. In May this year Birse became one of the first companies to win a Highways Agency “target zero” site safety award. Employees were unanimous that they feel safe at work, and 97% agreed health and safety is an essential part of the business.

To improve onsite safety Doka Formwork systems developed the “windshield system”. The product allows contractors to work in winds as high as 72km an hour and gives them a fully enclosed working environment. Contractors are spared the harsh conditions and potential hazards normally associated with high-rise developments. One B&E reader said: “The Doka Windshield System is easy and safe to erect and install. Our workforce appreciates the safe and comfortable environment.”

Billington Structures has been designing, fabricating, and erecting structural steelwork for the construction industry since 1947, tackling projects from simple building frames to the most complex structures in excess of 5,000t. The company’s projects include the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, for which they were awarded a commendation at the 2006 Structural Steel Design Awards and the Ikea extension in Doncaster where it erected a steel structure with the equivalent floorspan of 31 football pitches.

Carillion, one of today’s leading infrastructure, building and business services companies, was one of the first companies to recognise the importance of combining construction excellence with a long-term service commitment to clients and the wider community.
