A £8m development from Costain based in Llanelli, Wales has set an engineering world record.
The project consisting of a coastal link-road between Morfa and Berwick has recently been completed, with the final installation of the largest span corrugated steel tunnel to be lifted into place in the world. The bridge was commissioned by Carmarthenshire County Council to cross the London- Fishguard main railway line at the National Wetlands Centre and link with busy Llanelli coastal link road. The operation was completed with 45 minutes to spare with the last section of bridge bedding at the second attempt, as a result of adverse weather. The road link will bypass traffic congestion on the busy Trostre roundabout and improve access to both the Millennium Coastal Park and the Machynys Peninsula Golf Course and destinations west of Llanelli like Burry Port and Pembrey Country Park. Carmarthenshire County Council project manager Adrian Harries said: "Using a corrugated steel structure has enabled us to create a far lower embankment profile than would normally be associated with a conventional crossing with significant savings which reduces the impact on the area which is alongside an ecological sensitive area and wildfowl sanctuary. "Costain has performed a remarkable job and given the county another engineering first." The road is expected to open early in 2008.
