Builder & Engineer Awards Criteria 2008
The overall criteria for this year’s awards are excellence in innovation, distinguished contribution to reducing the construction industry’s carbon footprint and outstanding contribution to the built environment. The categories are open to projects completed between 16 June 2007 and 16 June 2008.

Public Project of the Year
The public sector is our industry’s biggest client, and we’re looking for projects that impress. Entries will show exceptional standards in design, construction, delivery and overall operational performance.

Sports/Leisure Project of the Year
With the Olympics on all our minds, we’re looking for projects that pave the way when it comes to building for the 2012 games  Projects in this category will show they’re ahead of the field when it comes to delivering top class venues, and the gold medal will go to that special project that makes a real difference both locally and nationally.

Commercial/Retail Project of the Year
Whether you’re involved with sprucing up city centres or you’re creating massive retail space on the outskirts, we want to hear of projects that draw in the crowds and keep the clients coming back for more.

Housing Project of the Year
Will all the homes on your private project sell? Is your social housing project at the very heart of the community? This category is open to private and public sector housing projects and welcomes innovation in design and a sound environmental approach. The judges will also keep an eye on tenant satisfaction for public sector projects, and commercial success of private developments, when drawing up the shortlist for this award.

Energy Efficient Project of the Year
The construction industry has a profound role to play in turning back the tide on climate change. For this award we want to hear about private and public sector projects that made a real difference to meeting targets to reduce UK carbon dioxide emissions. Entrants must show an energy efficient strategy to bust government and industry targets.

Civil Engineering Contractor of the Year
We’re looking for those companies that made an outstanding contribution to UK infrastructure. Handing over projects consistently within time and to budget will be crucial elements to the judges’ decision.

Sub Contractor of the Year
Excellent communication skills and a solid working relationship with clients and contractors will woo the judges for this award  We’re looking for firms that know how to get the job done through working seamlessly within the supply chain.

Main Contractor of the Year
The main contractor that stole the show last year was HBG. Will it be going for the double, or is there another main contractor waiting to usurp it? If your company completed at least one project in the 12 months before 16 June 2008 and thinks it can make the grade, get in touch, and it could be you that lifts this year’s award.

Project Manager of the Year
Arup fought off some very fierce competition from the likes of Mace and Shard of Glass project manager Turner and Townsend to take the project manager award home last year. We want to hear from those firms that were crucial to delivering projects on time and to cost for this year’s award.

Architectural Practice of the Year
If your practice makes an outstanding difference to the built environment, it could be in the running for this category. Sheppard Robson last year saw off strong competition to this toughly contested award and pipped 3D Reid, Haworth Tompkins and Strategic Design Alliance to the post to lift the award. We want to hear from those design visionaries who have made their mark on the changing shape of UK building.

Consulting Engineer of the Year
This year’s judges are looking for companies that can prove their worth when it comes to providing sound advice and delivering innovation to projects when they come to judging entrants in this category.

Safety on Site award
Safety is at the top of the construction industry’s agenda. Now in its third year, this category is for clients, project managers and contractors to demonstrate that they’ve shown innovation and commitment when it comes to the serious business of providing a safer onsite working environment.

Product of the Year
Has your product wowed the construction industry? We’re looking for exceptional companies that have developed exceptional products over the last two years, and through the appliance of science have helped the sector boost its performance in areas such as safety and efficiency.

Environmental Company of the Year
With environmental issues high up the construction agenda, we want to hear from those companies who pay more than just lip service to environmental issues and has in-depth credentials that set an example to the rest of the industry.
